Police gun down 3 bank robbers in Igarra

BENIN CITY-Operatives of Edo Police Command have gunned down
three suspected bank robbers during an attack on a new generation
bank at Igara town, the administrative headquarters of Akoko-Edo
local government area of the state.

The hoodlums also attacked a police station in the town.

The bank and police station sieges happened simultaneously
ostensibly to prevent the police from responding to distress
call.

One AK 47 riffle, two pump action guns, live and expended
cartridges as well as charms were exhibits said to have been
recovered and paraded along with the corpses of the suspects.

Other members of the robbery gang who could not stand the stiff
resistance launched by the gallant policemen on bank guard duties,
retreated with varying degrees of injuries.

The Commissioner of police in Edo State CP Johnson Kokumo stated
this while briefing journalists in Benin City shortly after he
returned from the scene of attack at Igara town, yesterday.

Lauding the uncommon gallantry displayed by policemen, CP Kokumo
noted that the last Thursday foiled bank robbery is a strong signal
to robbers that it is no longer business as usual for them.

He disclosed further that one police inspector Otoika Akhimen
and two civilians died during the siege.

It was gathered that the two civilians were suspects under
interrogation at the station when the gunmen invaded.

CP Kokumo assured members of Igara town of adequate security of
their lives and property.
